Baraye Mahsa (For Mahsa), 2022
Charcoal and acrylic on canvas
24 x 30"

This was my first of many Iran protest-themed portraits. On top of feeling powerless, I was missing my family and the things that were comforting and familiar to me (Persian food, hearing people speak in Farsi, etc.) as I was on a trip when the protests had begun. This portrait also marks a drastic change in my artistic style, moving from light and whimsical to dark, visceral and personal.
